Overview
Every year on August 29th, people around the world mark the International Day Against Nuclear Tests, which aims to increase awareness of the impacts of nuclear explosions in general and nuclear weapon test explosions in particular. The purpose of the International Day Against Nuclear Tests is to increase public awareness of the necessity of preventing nuclear disasters in order to prevent catastrophic impacts on the globe, humankind, and the environment.
Significance of International Day against Nuclear Tests
Since 1945, nuclear tests have been conducted, but prior to that, the negative impacts and potentially catastrophic outcomes of such tests received little to no attention. Since then, more than 2000 tests have been conducted, many of which have horrifying and terrible impacts on both the environment and human life.

In addition to this, atmospheric tests that involve nuclear fallout pose a risk. Following such devastation, it was thought necessary to observe a day in opposition to such a test in order to raise awareness of how severe the situation is. Thus, in order to increase public awareness against nuclear testing, the International Day against Nuclear Tests is commemorated each year on August 29.
History (Background) of the day
Resolution 64/35 had been unanimously adopted by the UN General Assembly on 2 December 2009, designating 29 August as the International Day against Nuclear Tests. The resolution emphasizes raising public awareness and educating people “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.” The Republic of Kazakhstan, along with a sizable number of sponsors and cosponsors, proposed the resolution in an effort to commemorate the shutdown of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site on August 29, 1991.
The first International Day against Nuclear Tests was observed in 2010. Every year after that, different events like symposia, conferences, exhibits, competitions, publications, lectures, media broadcasts, and other efforts have been planned around the globe to mark the day.
